common sense & news worthiness

Jean Paul Sarte is sitting in a French cafe,

revisiting his draft of Being and Nothingness.

He says to the waitress, "I'd like a cup of
coffee, please, no cream."

The waitress replies,"I'm sorry, monsieur,
but we have no cream, only milk."

"Make it no milk then."

City Without Pity, or Papers

One time in the late '70s at the paper,
all sorts of complaints were coming in
that people had not received their morning paper.

The drivers would go to the customers house,
only to see that they indeed had received the paper.
On the back page though, it was blank.
So rather than say they received the paper
but that one page was blank, they said they
didn't receive it. We had to fight with the
company as the carriers were blamed for having
not delivered when they indeed had.

Silly too, cause no one had that page on any paper.

Somehow the paper passed inspection and
thousands had made their way in the bay area.

Sadly, it wasn't a news section or anything
important, nope, there was no comic section.

Reminds me of what's going on this past week or so.
No dialog on issues, stuff to incite people to
yet again fight among one another, for no real reason.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah! The ways we communicate—or, don’t.

I enjoyed this post!

So much for no news is good news.

The Sartre story reminded me of the scene from Five Easy Pieces in which Jack Nicholson's character, Bobby, just wants to order plain toast but the waitress says they can't do that because it's against the rules...he tries another method:

Bobby: I'd like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee.

Waitress: A #2, chicken salad sand. Hold the butter, the lettuce, the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else?

Bobby: Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules.

In lieu of your insight, I've decided to endorse myself for the Presidency, as no one else is worthy.

I essentially have no platform, and I'll probably spend the majority of my time out of the White House traveling the world picking up chicks.

I have no real interest in solving any problems because it takes to much time, and is a lot of hard work, to which I'm "morally" opposed.

I don't care about "bipartisanshipismness" because I despise Wingnuts, and there's no way in Hell I'm cooperating and/or negotiating with them.

I will, however, legalize weed, and outlaw public displays of stupidity.

ssn: Anymore, it's mostly "the ways we don't communicate." ; (

toi:Who can ever forget that cinematic exchange? A great one, to be sure. ; )

fairlane: Ha, ha, public stupidity is everywhere, there's no escape, we're doomed!

Yes, but John Edwards has hair. Hillary Clinton cried, or not. All newspapers might as well be blank pages.

your posts have the ability to tug on the 'ol heartstrings. herb caen...my idol! my father got mentioned in his column a few times throughout it's lovely life span. he was so proud about that! the chron has sucked for a long time, without people like caen, charles mccabe, ralph gleason, and so on. it's a mere shadow of it's former self, like all "news" now.

Nothing changed with the debate last night, except maybe the news worthiness was decreased.

About a half-hour into the debate, an angry man started shouting, interrupting the event while security personnel intervened. Usually, these protestors are easy to dismiss as random nuts, but in this case, the heckler had a legitimate beef.

About 22 minutes into the Nevada Democratic debate, a heckler in the audience interrupted the proceedings, saying “these are f**cking race-based questions coming from you two, these are race-based questions…”

There was silence from the candidates and the moderators for about eight seconds with no mention of the heckler. Tim Russert, continued with his question for Sen. Hillary Clinton which focused on her characterization that Sen. Obama “is raising false hopes.”

I’ve seen debates in which hecklers jeer candidates, and I’ve seen debates in which hecklers take a stand for one issue or another, but this was the first debate I’ve seen in which a heckler went after a moderator. Worse, I think the guy was probably right.

Can't wait for the circus to leave town. It's been too long.

Hope your week is going well otherwise. :D

fred: Ah ha, I knew it was something they were drinking, or smoking. ; (

robin: This is the longest I've not read nor purchased a paper. They're bad and nothing of interest or concern seems to ever be printed on them. ; (

annie: I only met him once, 'cause he walked the picket line with us on our 2 week strike in '94. He was an interesting man, far more than you'd believe reading his column. Except for one cartoonist, no one I knew is there at either paper anymore.
It was bad when I left in '97, even more since Hearst took over the Chron! ; (

earl: I can't stomach any of the BS anymore. Maybe I need to start eating more junk food so I can feel part of the masses? ; (

alexys: You mean there's a circus in town? Where? ; (

It is frustrating to watch the candidates answer inane questions and then everyone dissects the answers...
Obama loses papers? OMG!

Taking things out of context and twisting it so that a candidate seems demented -- they don't need to do that, as we all know that all politicians are demented.

Has anyone asked the candidates what kind of tree they would be if they were a tree, yet?

that is the answer we are all waiting for, right? Only then will we be able to choose wisely.

squirrel: I often wonder if anyone really knows what "debate" really means and how they should be conducted.

Seems the media is forming not only what "we" are going to hear about, but "who" we should elect.

Freedom is another word for something else to lose, thanks to this administration........;(
