What is life?

It is the flash of a firefly in the night.

It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime.

It is the little shadow which runs

across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.

Crowfoot

I've been planning a short post about some old friends
for quite awhile now and will do so soon.

This song was written by David Maloney, of
Reilly and Maloney, who I met while in HS.

The song I planned to put here, will be in that post.

This is one of my favorite songs of his:

Great post! That’s a superb map! Insightful Crowfoot words! I had not heard of David Maloney or Reilly and Maloney; that’s a splendid song. I look forward to your future post featuring David Maloney!

Great map!

I believe some tribes have more than one name Delawares were Leni Lenape ? anyway it does get confusing.

Looking at the NY part of the map, I wonder where these fit in:

the Marechawick tribe (they were in Brooklyn but left and regrouped in Nyack with a tribe there called the Nayacks.) I read that when they sold Brooklyn to the Dutch they retained hunting and fishing rights, which the Dutch never let them keep. (both were connected to the Canarsee Tribe) I don;t know if they were Algonquin or Delaware or other...

I never knew there was a Peoria tribe, so many place names are Indian names though. We still have Ramapo People living in our county. Then we have Hackensack NJ and Ho-Ho-Kus....

What are you thoughts about Ethiopian yirgacheffe?

Interesting map. In Nebraska we always studied the plains Indians in school. There are so many small tribes that didn't make the map.

nick: Thanks and hope all is well your way ; )

megan: I'm guessing sometime in the 1800s???

rlb: Amazing, but there were more tribes not on this map. And Thanks & Cheers!

t & t: Probably more than we ever imagined. Sad they're mostly fragments of what they were ; (

bitchlet: Fine and U? OK ; )

squirrel: It's that way out here too. Funny that most people not only don't realize where the names originate, but that they don't feel anything for the tribes. The Miamis were all over Indiana and North. Now, still can't get recognized by the government for status? Strange and pathetic.

kurt:It is a bit flowery and tasty. If roasted fresh, should be nice as is the Harrar, although it's fruity, winey and a bit stronger than the Yirgacheffe. Hope that helps ; )

merle: In Ca we learned about the Miwoks, who were N of SF. Not much about any others, and obviously there were many off shots of all tribes it seems.

Hi!Coffee Messiah,
I have linked what I think is one of the most "beautiful" Official Website...that may ...compliment your map.
The Official Website of Dean's No# 1 Pick....Terence Malick's "The New World"
http://www.thenewworldmovie.com/feature3.html

Because of my interest in Native American culture, I have purchased several books about their culture including books on "Cartography " which features many interesting maps, but I am not sure if the map that you featured on your blog is in one of my books.
Tks,
dcd

Love the map! It is an eye opener. Thanks for sharing Crowfoot's words and the song.

It's sad that we should all be so impressed w/the map (I am!) as it should be common knowledge.

dcd: I'm not sure and can't remember where I found the map. A few years ago we went to a local Pow Wow and someone there may have pointed me to it?

mark: Glad you enjoyed the song. ; )

mary: As I said earlier, when I grew up, we learned only about a local group Miwoks, but there were many more in Ca. When my son went to school, he did not learn anything about Native Americans, so, it is worse now ; (

By chance would you know the name of the artist on the Crow painting?

simstone: Sorry, I had it written down, and then misplaced or threw away the paper it was on ; (
